A thoughtfully designed extension transforms a century old weatherboard home, creating more space for a family of five after a decade of cherished memories. The family valued the house's character and their history there, so preserving that essence and maximizing the north-facing backyard was essential.
A modest 76 square meters was carefully added across two levels to foster connections within the home and to the native garden beyond. This layout allows family members to engage with one another or find their own retreat as needed. Full-height sliding doors create a seamless separation between the cosy new living area and the kitchen and dining spaces, enabling adults to converse after dinner without distraction while the children enjoy their own space. This design approach eliminates the common assumption that a second living area is necessary. A timber deck flows seamlessly off the dining area through large sliding doors and receives dappled light through the flowering gum tree nearby.
Upstairs, the parents' new quarters feature a corner window intentionally positioned to overlook the gum tree and the many native birds it attracts.
The extension is clad in sustainably sourced Australian timber, which not only wraps the structure but also brings warmth and natural elements indoors. Strategically designed eaves allow winter sunlight to flood the space while providing shade during the summer months.
The family is thrilled with their extension and look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.
