SKYLIGHT HOUSE
FITZROY NORTH, VIC.
‘We loved working with Laura on the renovation of our house, her guidance and help through all phases was invaluable.
Laura’s design ideas and attention to detail when working with a tight site and challenging old terrace house have ensured our much-loved family home can meet our needs now and into the future.
And Laura’s support throughout the construction phase made everything so much easier. Thank you! ‘
Cath, Skylit House
Nestled in the vibrant inner-city suburb of Fitzroy North, this classic grand double-story brick terrace house, built over a century ago, has been reimagined to suit the needs of a modern, growing family. While preserving its historic charm, we carefully balanced a blend of contemporary design and functionality to infuse light and warmth into every corner of the home.
The clients sought to maximise natural light within their narrow, south-facing block, typical of the area’s terrace houses. The original 1980s kitchen was due for a change, or complete demolition in this case, and the challenge was to create a meaningful connection between old and new while optimising every square centimeter of space.
The new three-level extension is a testament to thoughtful spatial design. A narrow staircase from the living room was removed to open up the space, while a large, strategically placed window now bathes the room in natural light. A new staircase winds elegantly behind the original brick structure, connecting the past with the present.
In the kitchen and dining area, a slightly sunken layout enhances spatial flow, with a cleverly tucked-away powder room beneath the new staircase. Cleverly designed, efficient storage and grey grooved cabinetry, accented with oak shelving mean the space feels friendly, calm and uncluttered. Three skylights over an intimate dining banquette allow soft southern light, creating an inviting, well-lit communal area. From here, large sliding doors extend to a courtyard garden, connecting indoor and outdoor spaces.
Moving to the upper levels, a versatile bedroom was designed to accommodate one child or three, reflecting adaptability and future needs. A new skylit central play area inserted into the original building opens to a new family bathroom and a main bedroom suite with a renovated ensuite.
The third and top level of the extension contains a spacious bedroom and sliding doors to a small balcony with prised city views. Carefully detailed black metal screens are used on the windows and balcony to balance privacy and light.
Every detail in the interior finishes was chosen to create a sense of calm and warmth. New oak flooring throughout the home brings continuity, while painted exposed beams in the extension and oak accents contribute to a restrained yet inviting atmosphere. The home’s exterior complements the interior’s color palette, with darker tones establishing a cohesive dialogue between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
This transformation honours the home’s rich history while creating a bright, welcoming space that will evolve alongside its family for years to come.
